One of the things I am doing to support my homestead is offering things I make to others

One way to do this is with a farmstand and by going to farmers markets

Most people love cake!

That includes my husband

So my journey to making a cake recipe that we love started

My goal was to make a cake that we love and to be able to make mini cakes to sell

What makes yellow cake taste like yellow cake?

The yellow in yellow cake is there because if the egg yolk.

When you are mixing the batter, pay attention to when it turns yellow

It will be when you add the egg

The color becomes even more intense when you add extra egg yolks

What is a good frosting for yellow cake?

My favorite frosting for yellow cake is buttercream

I use that as the base

From there, I add flavor based on what I want the cake to taste like

My favorite thing to do is add some strawberry and blueberry simple syrup to the cake when it is done baking and some to the frosting

Such a delicious flavor!

What is the difference between vanilla, white, and yellow cake?

The difference between vanilla, white, and yellow cake is the egg

Vanilla cake is the broad flavor of cake that both white and yellow fall into

White cake is made with egg whites and yellow cake includes egg yolks

Ingredients:

For cake:

2 cups flour

½ cup sourdough discard

¼ cup corn starch

1 ¼ cup sugar

2 tsp salt

½ cup butter

¼ cup oil

3 eggs

2 egg yolks

1 tbsp vanilla extract

2 tsp baking powder

¾ cup milk

For frosting:

1 cup of softened butter

¼ cup milk or heavy cream

1 tsp of vanilla extract

5 cups of powdered sugar

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare your cake pans with parchment paper and oil

If you are using the mini cake pans, then just spray with oil since the cake will stay in the pan

Add the sugar, butter, and oil to a mixer and mix well

Add the eggs and egg yolk next and combine

Then add everything else for the cake and mix until combined and somewhat airy

Add batter to your prepared pans and cook for 30-45 minutes

Or until a toothpick can be inserted and removed with little or no crumbs

Allow the cake to cool completely

To make the frosting, add soft butter, milk or heavy cream, and vanilla to a mixer and beat together

Start adding the powdered sugar until it is all well combined

Add color or simple syrup if desired

When the cake is cool, you can poke holes with a fork and add some simple syrup

Then top with the frosting and enjoy!
